Excellence in surgery is ECMC’s standard operating procedure.

As Western New York’s designated Adult Regional Trauma Center, as well as a destination of choice for patients facing every kind of medical issue, ECMC offers a staff of surgeons with expertise that encompasses major surgeries, complex procedures and elective surgeries alike.

Each year, our surgeons—on site 24 hours a day, 7 days a week—perform more than 7,000 surgeries, saving lives and helping patients throughout Western New York. In addition, the recovery area at ECMC’s Ambulatory Care Center puts dedicated nurses and staff and all pre- and post-operative care services in one central location, including a pain management program with steroid injections for patients in chronic pain.

Our technology, resources, and cutting-edge facilities also help make ECMC your best choice for a wide range of surgical procedures.

General Surgery

When it’s someone you love, there’s nothing “general” about general surgery. So whether from an accident, illness, or sports injury, our surgeons bring leading expertise to general surgeries across circumstances and health concerns.

Specialized Surgery

Our specialized surgery includes larger-scale, more in-depth patient cases, including pancreas and kidney transplants and other less common procedures. We deliver specialized teams of surgeons, nurses, and anesthesiologists for the best possible outcomes.

Elective Surgery

So why should you choose ECMC for elective surgery?

  • From shoulder reconstruction to knee surgery, ECMC is the facility of choice for patients around Western New York to have elective surgery. We offer special expertise in orthopedics, and commonly handle our area’s most complex cases.
  • We’re the region’s only designated Adult Trauma Center, which means the surgeon performing your knee surgery in the morning could have spent the previous day reconstructing someone’s entire leg. Because our surgeons handle some of the most difficult and complex cases, they’re extremely skilled and highly experienced, able to handle nearly any type of procedure.
  • Of course, our partnership with UB Orthopedics is also a significant advantage, as it brings some of the most recognized, innovative specialists in Western New York—who also happen to be University at Buffalo professors—together with our highly trained staff here at ECMC.

So remember, even when it’s not an emergency, ask your doctor to refer you to ECMC.

Minimally Invasive Surgery

Opened in 2003, ECMC’s Minimally Invasive Surgery Center is not just the first and only adult-focused operating room of its kind in Western New York—it’s also the most technologically advanced adult surgical suite of its kind for adults in our region.

The minimally invasive surgery suite at ECMC features advanced video technology that lets surgeons perform procedures through small incisions, with minimal scarring and fewer complications.

Minimally invasive procedures performed at ECMC include:

  • Angioplasty/stenting of arteries and veins
  • Arthroscopic surgery of knees, shoulders, elbows, and ankles
  • Laparoscopic gall bladder surgery and appendix removal
  • Laparoscopic intestinal surgery
  • Laparoscopic kidney removal for tumor and transplantation
  • Laparoscopic removal of ovarian cysts
  • Laparoscopic solid organ surgery
  • Minimally invasive surgery of the chest
  • Urologic endoscopy procedures

Bariatric Surgery

At Synergy Bariatrics, a department of ECMC, our mission is to provide compassionate, patient-centered medical and surgical care to patients seeking better health through weight loss surgery, including sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass surgery, and revisional bariatric surgery. Neurosurgery services at ECMC include emergency room consultations and immediate care for severely injured patients, surgery and daily intensive care services. The entire team works closely with the trauma team and the nurses and physicians in the intensive care unit.

In 2005, ECMC acquired Compass, a navigation system for neurosurgery that isolates and identifies tumor location during surgery, providing a “map” for the surgeons even before they make their first cut.

Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery

The Center for Oncology Care at ECMC offers specialty plastic surgery and reconstructive surgery to restore a sense of normalcy and wellness after illness or trauma.

Surgical Clinics

The Department of Surgery conducts four surgical clinics each week at ECMC. All clinics deal with general surgical problems, trauma referrals, and post-operative care. (Learn more »)
