Manage care for loved ones

Caring for a family member or loved one often means helping manage their health information. MyChart proxy access allows you to securely view and manage another person’s health care on their behalf.

What is proxy access?

Proxy access gives you permission to access someone else’s MyChart account. This can be helpful for:

  • Parents managing a child’s health care
  • Caregivers supporting a family member
  • Adults assisting aging parents or loved ones

Access levels may vary based on age, relationship and patient consent.

What you can do

With approved proxy access, you can:

  • Schedule and manage appointments
  • View test results and visit summaries
  • Send and receive messages with care teams
  • Manage medications and request refills
  • Pay bills and view billing information

All access is secure and follows privacy guidelines.

Request proxy access

The easiest way to get proxy access is to contact your loved one’s care provider. However, if the loved one you wish to have access to has an ECMC MyChart already AND you have an ECMC MyChart, they can directly invite you to be a proxy. Simply:

  • Have your loved one navigate to Sharing Hub Activity and select that they’d like to share access.
  • From there, they can send you the proxy invite.

Child vs. adult proxy access

Proxy access varies based on the patient’s age and privacy requirements. MyChart is designed to support caregiver involvement while protecting patient privacy.

Children (Under age 12)

Parents or legal guardians can request proxy access to help manage a child’s care.

What you can do:
  • Schedule & manage appointments
  • View test results & visit summaries
  • Message the care team
  • Manage medications
  • Pay bills & view billing
Important to know:
  • Full proxy access is typically available.
  • Access automatically changes when the child turns 12.
Teens (Ages 12-17)

As children grow, they gain more control over their health information. Proxy access is more limited during this stage to protect privacy. If you’d like your access to your teen’s information to be expanded, they must talk with their care team to make that update to ensure that they are comfortable with this change.

What to expect:
  • Parents/guardians may have limited access to certain info.
  • Some test results, visit details or messages may not be visible.
  • Teens may have their own MyChart account.
Why access changes:
  • New York State law allows teens to consent to certain types of care.
  • MyChart reflects these protections to keep health information private.

Adults (Age 18 and older)

Adults must give permission for someone else to access their MyChart account. Adults can assign a limited access option or a full access option to their proxy, depending on what they’d prefer.

How it works:
  • The patient must authorize proxy access.
  • Access can be customized based on preferences.
  • The patient can remove access at any time.
What proxies can do:
  • Assist with billing and payments.
  • View health information and visit summaries.
  • Communicate with care teams.
  • Help manage appointments and medications.

Your privacy matters

ECMC follows all federal and New York State privacy laws to protect patient information. Access is always secure and based on patient consent and age-specific guidelines.
