Biography
Leonard E. Egede, MD, MS, FACP, is a distinguished physician, researcher, and leader in the field of medicine. He is a physician and Director of Population Health at ECMC. He currently serves as the Charles and Mary Bauer Endowed Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the Jacobs School of Medicine & Biomedical Sciences at the University at Buffalo. Additionally, he is the President and CEO of UBMD Internal Medicine, overseeing primary and specialty care across 12 medical disciplines.
Dr. Egede is renowned for his groundbreaking research on health disparities, focusing on the social determinants of health that contribute to inequities in healthcare access and outcomes. His work addresses critical issues such as income level, housing quality, and neighborhood safety, as well as systemic factors like structural racism and redlining.
He has developed innovative interventions, including telehealth and financial incentives, to combat these disparities and improve care for underserved populations.
Before joining the University at Buffalo, Dr. Egede held leadership roles at the Medical College of Wisconsin, where he transformed the Division of General Internal Medicine by enhancing clinical operations, research productivity, and faculty development. Dr. Egede’s contributions extend beyond academia, as he actively collaborates with community leaders to develop programs that promote affordable housing, access to healthy foods, and health education. His vision and dedication continue to shape the future of healthcare and medical education.
