65 Erie County Medical CenterLeadership ECMC Leadership: From creation of Public Benefit Corporation to successful and thriving health care corporation. After an extensive national search in 2004, Michael Young, the former president and CEO of a prominent Pennsylvania hospital, was chosen as the new CEO of ECMC Corporation in December of that year. Mr. Young, who assumed his duties as CEO in January of 2005, brought a remarkable record of expanding care while increasing profitability to ECMC. He continued that style of effective leadership at the medical center, bringing greater fiscal stability to the hospital while ensuring that it provided excellent acute care to the uninsured and underinsured patients in the region. In 2008, Mike Young accepted a new position as the CEO of an Atlanta hospital and former ECMC Corporation board chairman Jody Lomeo was tapped to become the hospital’s interim CEO. Mr. Lomeo’s appointment coincided with the imminent merger of ECMCC and Kaleida Health under the banner of the Great Lakes Health System of WNY of which he was also appointed vice-chair. In 2009, after another national search for a permanent CEO, Jody Lomeo was named the new ECMCC chief executive officer by the corporation’s board of directors. In light of his strong leadership qualities and his diplomatic and collaborative abilities, it was generally agreed that Mr. Lomeo was the ideal choice to head the medical center in its new partnership with its former competitor. Then in 2014, Jody Lomeo was named interim CEO of both Kaleida Health and Great Lakes Health while continuing as chief executive at ECMC. During his tenure, Mr. Lomeo implemented several physician-led clinical improvements and new programs and facilities at ECMC involving head and neck surgery, breast surgery, and orthopaedics, as well as a primary care network of providers. Under Mr. Lomeo, the expansion of the ECMC campus included the Regional Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health, the Regional Center of Excellence for Transplantation and Kidney Care, and the Terrace View Long-Term Care Facility. In April 2014, Jody Lomeo resigned his post at ECMC and became the permanent President and CEO of Kaleida Health. Richard C. Cleland, MPA, FACHE, NHA, served as ECMC’s interim CEO from April 2014 to May 2015, after former Chief Executive Officer Jody L. Lomeo was named President and CEO of the Great Lakes Health System of WNY and Kaleida Health. Mr. Cleland then served as ECMC’s CEO from May 2015 to November 2015. He was Chief Operating Officer from 2012-14, and held various other leadership positions at ECMC since 2006. After serving as president of ECMCC, Thomas J. Quatroche Jr., PhD, became President and CEO of the corporation in January 2016. He had previously been a member of the executive team as senior vice president. Before becoming CEO, Dr. Quatroche was also in charge of overseeing surgical services, cardiology, oncological services, and several key medical departments. He has served the hospital as the chief corporate affairs officer and was responsible for external affairs and strategic initiatives of the corporation, including affiliations with Great Lakes Health, Kaleida Health, and other organizations important to the corporation’s strategic direction. UnderDr.Quatroche’sleadershipECMCexperiencedthebusiest and most successful year in its history in 2016, which continued through 2017. “ECMC’s commitment to quality and compassionate care for our patients continues to make ECMC a first choice for care for many Western New Yorkers,” said Dr. Quatroche. “While 2016 proved to be ECMC’s best year historically, our strong performance throughout 2017 reinforced what we have known for a very long time – ECMC’s unique culture of talented, experienced and compassionate caregivers has helped create an environment of hope and healing that our community turns to when it matters most. Our staff is truly a family of caregivers who each day do everything to help improve the lives of so many in our community. We continue to be good stewards of the community’s hospital through our strong operations and sound financial results. We thank our community for continuing to put their trust in ECMC.” Thomas J.
