56 Erie County Medical Center 1978-Present Breast health is our goal. The Mobile Mammography Coach hit the road in 2012 to provide convenient breast cancer screenings to area women, most of whom would not otherwise have had access to the critically important examinations. Owned by ECMC Foundation, operated by WNY Breast Health, and supported by business partners, the coach includes two digital mammography units to provide screenings to underserved and untested women across Western New York. One impetus for the project was the high rate of new breast cancer cases in Upstate New York, detailed in a 2010 report. According to the American Cancer Society, mammography screening reduces breast cancer mortality by 35 to 50 percent. In 2016, the ECMC Foundation received a generous $71,598 grant from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, which helped fund additional breast cancer education and screening services, including the creation of a new video highlighting the Mobile Mammography Coach. In the first five years of operation, over 15,000 women were screened. ECMC Foundation. The ECMC Foundation was formed in 1994 to support the lifesaving mission of ECMC. As the hospital has evolved, so has the importance of the Foundation, which plays a pivotal role in hospital support and development as well as in community initiatives. ECMC Foundation was instrumental in the creation of the Russell J. Salvatore Orthopaedic Unit, and it owns and operates the region’s only Mobile Mammography Coach. In addition, the Foundation created and operates the Farmers’ Market at Grider, and supports staff training and conferences as well as numerous programs to enhance patient care and comfort at ECMC. Each year, the Foundation sponsors two major community events, the ECMC Foundation Golf Classic and the Springfest Gala as well as the Subaru 4-Mile Chase and WNY Billieve Challenge. The Foundation’s Capital Trauma Center Campaign is currently raising capital to finance the expansion of the hospital’s Trauma Center and Emergency Department to meet the demands of today and the needs of tomorrow.
