Western New York Regional Trauma (RTAC)

The people of Western New York enjoy geographic and seasonal diversity. Because of this, the pattern of traumatic injury in this area is as diverse as the region and its seasons. Our trauma victims suffer various injuries, ranging from motor vehicle collisions on snow-covered roads, to off-road mishaps while riding an ATV or snowmobiles across wooded trails. Skiing accidents can occur on a snowy slope or while water-skiing across one of our Great Lakes. Our regional providers care for victims of traumatic injuries in heavily populated urban districts as well as rural regions. Injuries may occur as result of factory or farm machinery, falls, industrial accidents or even burns. Regardless of the source of traumatic injury, the teams of trauma care providers - from pre-hospital to community hospital and trauma center - work together to provide the finest trauma care available.

The Western New York Trauma System allows pre-hospital care providers and community hospitals to work together with regional trauma centers, to provide care to victims of trauma. The system covers the following eight counties: Allegany Cattaraugus, Chautauqua, Erie, Genesee, Niagara, Orleans and Wyoming counties.

Western New York Regional Trauma Advisory Committee Mission Statement

Consistent with the structure of the New York State Trauma System, the goal of this committee is to identify approaches and implement a mechanism that ensures that all trauma patients in the Western New York region have essential access to quality care.

The purpose of the Western New York Regional Trauma Advisory Committee is to enhance communication among constituents, oversee implementation and evaluation of a regional trauma system and support a regional trauma system.

Members to this committee consist of representatives from regional trauma centers, and community hospitals throughout the eight counties of Western New York, as well from Emergency Medical Services. These members are designated as representatives from their institutions by the administration of that facility.

Within the Western New York region the Erie County Medical Center is the designated adult regional trauma center and the Women and Children's Hospital the designated pediatric regional trauma center. As such these centers provide tertiary care of trauma victims throughout the region. Transfer protocols have been established, which delineate the duties and responsibilities of medical, nursing and pre-hospital support services within the trauma system. The regional trauma advisory committee provides a system for reviewing trauma patient care for completeness and compliance relative to regional protocols. Meetings are held on a quarterly basis.

The Regional Trauma Centers at Erie County Medical Center and Women and Children's Hospital

The trauma centers offer educational programs on the management of the adult and pediatric trauma patient. These programs:

• Are available on a variety of trauma related topics and may be presented to your staff
• May focus on the adult or pediatric patient or on both
• May be tailored to meet the educational needs of your facility
• Are presented by trauma / emergency / critical care physicians and nurses
• Are offered as a service to the Western New York community with no cost to your facility
