John R. Border, M.D. Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU)
As Western New York's only Adult Regional Trauma Center, ECMC cares for the most critically injured and ill patients, including those who need general surgery, orthopedic surgery, neurosurgery, ENT and kidney transplants. These patients - men and women, adults and seniors - come from throughout the eight counties of Western New York.
During the critical phase of their illness or injury, these trauma and surgical patients are treated in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit (TICU), an 18-bed, state-of-the-art critical care unit dedicated to specialized care. The TICU was designed by trauma nurses and physicians, who configured the Unit to accommodate the advanced technology (such as a fluoroscopy suite) needed to care for our sickest patients, while optimizing efficiency in patient care.
The staff and faculty in the TICU is comprised of an interdisciplinary team of experts who are specially trained in the care and management of critically ill and injured patients. This collaborative team of nurses, physicians, physical and occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, dietitians, social workers and clergy provide care based on best practices. That's just one reason why we're known for our results and why so many patients and families count on ECMC.
The TICU is dedicated in honor of the late John R. Border, M.D., an internationally recognized pioneer in modern trauma care, research and intensive care medicine. Dr. Border founded ECMC's Trauma Center, which was first established in 1978.
