Laboratory Medicine
No appointment needed
You never need an appointment for lab work at ECMC. We respect your time, which is why it’s our goal to have you in and out in 15 minutes. Most tests are completed within 24 hours, with printed laboratory reports mailed or delivered to your doctor the next business day. At ECMC, all our experienced, courteous phlebotomists specialize in your comfort and are truly committed to 100% patient satisfaction.
A fully accredited laboratory
ECMC’s Department of Laboratory Medicine is a comprehensive, full-range service and reference laboratory that handles approximately three million tests every year. In addition to testing patients at ECMC, all our off-site primary care centers and the Erie County Home, we also perform tests for other area hospitals, HMOs, health agencies and private physicians. Our services include general testing, specialized testing, limited and extended general health screens, organ and disease-oriented test groupings and a complete range of HIV testing and women's healthcare needs for cervical cytology and molecular diagnosis of infective agents.
We are licensed and accredited by several agencies and organizations, including the New York State Department of Health, the Joint Commission on Hospital Accreditation, and the American Association of Blood Banks. We participate in a proficiency test program and consistently score extremely high for accuracy. In addition, many of our staff members are board certified in their medical specialty and are affiliated with the University at Buffalo’s School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. Doctoral-level clinical scientists and physicians oversee the department’s clinical operations. Quality assurance (QA), quality management (QM) and continuous quality improvement (CQI) measures are consistently followed to strengthen our service delivery and ensure accurate testing.
The major divisions of the department include:
- Anatomic pathology and cytology
