Dr. Paula Burkhard is a gastroenterology specialist who treats patients at ECMC on both an inpatient and outpatient basis. In her role, she manages the care of adult patients of all ages and backgrounds in clinical situations that range from basic gastroenterology and liver disease to specialized hepatobiliary and pancreatic problems.
In addition to office-based consultations, she administers routine endoscopic procedures as well as complicated emergent and advanced endoscopic procedures.
As an academic physician, Dr. Paula Burkhard also teaches and supervises medical students, residents, and fellows in her role as Clinical Associate Professor at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.
Her research touches a number of topics in gastroenterology and hepatology, but she takes special interest in cellular absorptive processes and the role of immunity in preventing and causing diseases. Guided by the philosophy that academic physicians should be lifelong learners, she also mentors clinical research projects with medical residents and review manuscripts for publication in the medical literature.
Dr. Paula Burkhard is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Gastroenterological Association, the American Institute of Pancreatology, and the American College of Gastroenterology.
