Radiology (X-ray)
The Department of Imaging Services at ECMC provides state-of-the-art imaging services to more than 70,000 Western New Yorkers every year. Our services include:
- CT Imaging—Because ECMC is Western New York’s only Adult Regional Trauma Center, CT scans are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
- MRI Imaging—An MRI uses radio waves and magnetization instead of X-rays to create a detailed view of your body. ECMC offers MRI services through MRI Associates of Buffalo, located on ECMC’s main Grider Street campus.
- Bone Densitometry (DEXA Scan)—Osteoporosis (the progressive loss of bone density) often goes undetected until a person’s bones are fragile and subject to fracture. With our special equipment, we can measure your bone density early and help you prevent future bone loss.
- Breast Imaging (Mammography)—Early detection is the most important step in successfully treating breast cancer, which is why the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the American Cancer Society, the American Medical Association and the American College of Radiology all recommend annual mammogram screening for women, beginning at age 40. At ECMC, our professional staff uses the latest technology in a comfortable and private screening area for safe and reliable mammograms.

Why Choose ECMC for Radiology?
At ECMC, we make sure you’re comfortable and informed, from the time you walk in the door until the time you leave (usually less than an hour later).
We're a regional trauma center, which is why we have state-of-the-art, life-saving technology, including Direct Digital Radiography, Computed Radiography, PACS, and a 64-slice PET/CT scanner, which will be located at the Western New York Medical Arts Building (coming later in 2006 as part of our partnerships with Eastern Niagara Radiology & Nuclear Medicine Associates, the Buffalo Medical Group, Diagnostic Imaging Associates, Spectrum Radiology, and the Catholic Health System). Our eight board-certified radiologists (including six with subspecialty training) and dozens of licensed radiologic technologists perform 130,000 procedures per year—more than any other single healthcare facility in Western New York.
ECMC also has one of the most advanced and innovative Digital Subtraction Angiography Suites for diagnostic and therapeutic procedures. We contract with two board-certified radiation physicists who serve as safety officers, providing on-site compliance and accreditation testing. And we work with your physician, making results available nearly instantaneously through a secure website.
