BUFFALO, NEW YORK; October 27, 2006-Of the 50 hospitals in New York State that treat trauma patients and are evaluated by the New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) in the department's most recently released report on trauma care, The New York State Trauma System, July 2006, Erie County Medical Center (ECMC), the Regional Trauma Center for Western New York, ranked first with the best trauma survival rate in the state.

Included in the report are statistics on: Cases (number of trauma cases), Deaths, Observed Mortality (death) Rate (OMR), Expected Mortality Rate (EMR), Risk Adjusted Mortality Rate (RAMR), and what is referred to as the "z-Score," which is "...an equivalent way of comparing observed and expected mortality rates." Lower mortality rate(s) and a lower z-Score equate to better survival rates. Table 31, on pages 64-66 in the report, shows that ECMC outperformed every other evaluated hospital in the state with a z-Score of -3.47, meaning that ECMC had the best survival rate "...for New York State Inpatients based upon Five Adult Mechanisms of Injury."

ECMC Clinical Director of Surgery, Trauma and Burn Services, Roger W. Seibel, M.D., explained, "This data clearly demonstrates that trauma patients admitted to ECMC are more likely to survive here than in any other hospital in New York State. Yet it is also important to explain that the success of our program is due to our philosophy of trauma care. The expertise and dedication of multiple specialty services and personnel support ECMC's trauma program."

"ECMC's clinical centers of excellence, including those for surgery, emergency, renal (kidney), orthopaedic and cardiac care provide top quality medical services to our community. These nationally competitive trauma outcomes resulting from clinical expertise add to the firm foundation around which to build the ideal medical care delivery system for our region," stated Michael A. Young, M.H.A., F.A.C.H.E., President and Chief Executive Officer of ECMC Corporation.

"These results are a reflection of the bringing together of a skilled and professional team of physicians, nurses and other trauma staff who have established standards of excellence. They are committed to quality and to continued improvement in the compassionate care that they deliver to a very special population of patients," said ECMC Corporation Chief Medical Officer John R. Fudyma, M.D.

Since the early 1960s, ECMC has set trends in trauma and emergency care, developing practices, procedures and in some cases devices (such as the first crash cart) that have since become standards of care now implemented/utilized in hospitals across the nation and the globe.

The Erie County Medical Center (ECMC) Corporation encompasses an advanced academic medical center with 550 inpatient beds and 156 skilled nursing home beds, on- and off-campus health centers, over 40 outpatient specialty care clinics, and the Erie County Home, a 586-bed skilled nursing facility. The medical center serves as the regional center for trauma, burn, rehabilitation, and a major teaching facility for the State University of New York at Buffalo. The ECMC Corporation is dedicated to being the medical center of choice through excellence in patient care and customer service.
