Why here. Why now.
The elderly are the fastest growing population group with chronic kidney disease (CKD) and the Western New York region includes a significantly large aging population. CKD is prevalent among African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans, with the highest risk for kidney failure among those with diabetes, high blood pressure, or a family history of kidney disease. African Americans comprise nearly 40% of Buffalo’s population and another 10% are Hispanic or other non-Caucasian races. These segments of the population are historically medically underserved and are disproportionately affected by current economic conditions, leading to increased health disparities and a greater prevalence of chronic disease and its risk factors. Quality, affordable healthcare for at-risk populations is needed now more than ever.

“When I needed a kidney transplant,
I initially went to the Cleveland Clinic. They told me they could do my kidney transplant but they also told me I should probably think about moving to Cleveland for both the pre- and post-operative treatment. Fortunately, I was able to get the treatment I needed right here since the level of expertise, the professional approach, compassion, and medical ability at ECMC is outstanding.
We need to build on this success and establish a world class facility and environment in which to treat kidney disease and provide for kidney transplantation. Because of the tremendous need in WNY for these services, there is a compelling reason to keep people close to home and treated locally and avoid the need to travel elsewhere for treatment.”
